The urban museum

The town of Neustadt a.d. Waldnaab has created a treasure box of its own by establishing an urban museum and expanding it gradually. It is situated in Kirchplatz, in the shadow of the spire of the parish church of St.George. The former school building, which was erected in the 17th century, was renovated after a far-sighted decision made by the council of the town of Neustadt and was delivered to its purpose after four years of construction work.

The exhibits, which are carefully looked after and and permanently updated, allow you insights into the work and way of life of the Neustadt people again and again.

The museum is divided up into the following departments:
glass, trade and commerce, treasures from townspeople´s houses, churches and monasteries, and local history. A smoky kitchen, a Christmas manger, and vitrines with various exhibits complete , the compact, but not lavish general impression.
The showpiece of the collection is a 1-meter- tall vase of gilded ruby. The prototype of a dish that exsists worldwide only three times (its owners are Franz-Josef Strauss, King Hussein of Jordan, and the Frank family) demonstrates skill in a masterly fashion.

Do not overlook the traditional glassmakers´ proverb „Es ist ein unendlich Kreuz, Glass zu machen" (It means to bear an immense cross to make glass).
After climbing the staircase, the visitor stands in front of the „Rauchkuchl", a "smoky kitchen" where they used to smoke fish and ham for preservation. Trade and commerce of the Neustadt people are exhibited in the next room. Religious objects from churches and monasteries can be seen in an adjoining room. The so-called „Prager Jesulein" (the Little Jesus from Prague) is a remarkable piece, which reminds us of the Princes of Lobkowitz and their homeland.

„Aus Bürgerhäusern" (from townspeople´s houses) is the headline of the next room.
The baroque Christmas manger harbors more than a hundred figurines and animals. It is certainly a piece of high artistic value.

After climbing down the stairs into the last room the visitor gets an introduction into urban history.
Charters and other important documents are exhibited here. The showpiece of the room is certainly a glove of Emperor Karl IV, that he left the Neustadt people as a pawn.

Vitrines with historic uniforms and treasures from former eastern territories complete the collection. These pieces were granted to the town by Neustadt residents who were expelled mainly from Bohemia and former German territories that became Polish after WW II.
